Once al-Maʿāfī bin Sulaymān was walking with his companion, and his companion turned to him, frowned and said, “How cold it is today!”
Al-Maʿāfī said, “Have you warmed up now?”
“No,” he replied.
Al-Maʿāfī said, “So what was the point of complaining? If you had glorified Allāh, at least it would have been better for you.”
– Taken from “Enjoy Your Life” by Dr. M. al-ʿĀrifī

MasyaAllah! When I read that, it really hit me with such profundity. For one, it was because of the sheer simplicity of the message, and the other, due to the ease with which complains are made.

A saying I’ve read before goes: “Although the tongue weighs very little, few people are able to hold it.” It is so easy to make a passing comment about the weather, or the food, or your boss, or something or the other. Hours and days pass and we scarcely realize that the Recording Angels are keeping account of all the words that passes through our lips. How many are beneficial? Which portion are sincere? And which portion are blatant lies?

“He does not utter a statement except that there is an observer by him ready to record it.” [Sûrah Qâf : 18]

Narrated by Abu Hurairah:

The Prophet SAW said, “Do you know the thing which most commonly brings people into Paradise? It is fear of Allah and good character. Do you know what most commonly brings people into Hell? It is the two hollow things: the mouth and the private parts.”

In these days of MSN, Facebook walls and Twitter updates, our fingers are substitutes for our tongue. Our thoughts are easily converted into words and shared on so many platforms. It would be a great reminder to remember the following ahadith & lines from the Qur’an before we utter the next word or type our latest Facebook update:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his neighbor. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should show hospitality to his guest.”
Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim ]

“O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak a word that is right. He will set right for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great achievement.”Sûrah al-Ahzâb : 70-71]

When we have nothing beneficial to say, silence is golden. Once, Mu`âdh b. Jabal asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) to inform him of some good work that would admit him into Paradise and distance him from the Hellfire. The Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned to him the virtues of many good deeds, then said: “Shall I inform you of the foundation of all of that?”

Mu`âdh said: “Certainly.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) took hold of his tongue and said: “Restrain yourself from this.”

Mu`âdh then asked: “O Prophet of Allah! Are we held to task for the things that we say?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu`âdh! Does anything topple people headlong into the Hellfire save the harvests of their tongues?” Sunan al-Tirmidhî and Sunan Ibn Mâjah ]

May Allah help us to guard our tongues and keep it busy with remembrance of Him and salawaat upon the Prophet SAW instead!
